Getting frustrated at finding nothing but bottle caps and cans!

Hi, I'm also from S. Florida, West Palm Beach actually. I'm fairly new at metal detecting and don't really have a top of the line detector. I'm getting frustrated at finding nothing but cans and nails. I've gone from Melbourne, Vero Beach, Ft. Pierce down to West Palm Beaches and have found nothing of value except the occasional penny, nickel and quarter now and then. Are there any tricks of the trade you can give me?
