The late great Jimi Hendrix, the greatest guitar player ever. First time Clapton watched him play I believe it was Jeff Beck he told "we are in trouble"...

Playing upside down guitar to boot...

although I like listening to Hendrix play,

For some reason I really don't consider him that great.

perhaps it's partly because I never played Guitar & don't know how hard it is to play those cords.
(he learned upside down, So I wouldn't think it was that hard for him,
as it would be for a Righty to Turn his guitar over)

and Perhaps it's because I don't think he was anywhere close to

Frank Zappa, Robin Trower, David Gilmore, steve Vai, or Carlos Santana to name a few off the top of my head who could play everyhing written by Hendrix I'm sure.

But Different era of course

Just about everyone you named at one time or another have acknowledged Hendrix as being the greatest .

I don't doubt most Guitarists do consider Jimi the Greatest,
However in my Mind I don't see why.
as I said Perhaps if they are considering in his Era, Yes .
But Greatest of all time ?
Not me .

I still believe they all can play everything he did, But not with an Upside down Guitar.
But then He couldn't play with a right side up guitar.
(I believe I read he refused a left handed Guitar when offered)

Now I don't know how many mastered using their Mouth to play :tongue3:

But we all have our Favorites.

I saw Zappa, Trower & Gilmore{ if he was on the Wall tour. my seat was too far away to see their faces, could have been a surrogate band as the song says )

Excellent song! Excellent artist!

Lets not forget about SRV, folks. I can only imagine (or can I??) what he'd be putting out if still with us.

Yes Either one Stevie Or Hendrix for that matter had room for Improvement I'm sure.
Maybe even Zappa could have learned new things if he were alive yet.

I just think calling any Guitarist best ever
Is like calling Janis Joplin or Mama Cass best female singer ever :tongue3:

now the Beatles may have been the Greatest band ever,
Because they didn't need to know how to sing or play.
Just make noise on stage while Little girls Screamed & peed themseves :laughing7:
But does that really make them the Greatest ?

Left handed, right handed. Turn the guitar upside down......whole new set of rules. Position, shot.
Notes...no longer relevent.
Jimi used his thumb for certain chords. That threw music theory out the door. He was the first to use effects, feedback.
I as a kid tried like hel to copy his songs. they were off, different, new......
Pure natural talent.
I love SRV. he copied Jimi big time. look at his albums, a lot of covers. Little wing, voodo child...

Hendrix certainly is iconic as many others are ..but if you get the chance to see Joe Bonamassa, live from Royal Albert Hall, you may be equally impressed...IMO

I would kiss the ground Hendrix walked on, but in the over 40 years since his death I have realized with the many varied styles of guitar playing that its impossible to say who was best.

I depends on if you are grading speed, emotion, complexity etc.

Hendrix to Freddie King to Leo Kottke to Marty Robbins, it just depends on what makes you happy.

I'm definitely no Mathis fan :tongue3: Too Wimpy for my taste right down there at the bottom of the barrel, in the corner with the Sludge that never quite dries.
and is highly toxic.
with that Gomer Pyle guy
