Awesome old 1861 Ledger

Hello,
this 1861 - 1874 ledger comes from Saginaw /Michigan .
There are 60 numbered pages both sides handwritten.
The idea is that this man had a General Store or Farm at
the outskirts of Saginaw City.
I have just took some Pics at random of the many written pages .
They were day - to - day events written down in an amazing combination.
I looked for some extra tipps about the civil war in those days.
For instance, briefly he wrote :
.... " Today I paid the Volunteer's Fund. "....
...... " Town to one days service to see about the Equality of the Draft "......
Here the Pics :

Great piece of history! I'm sure the local historical library would love a photocopy.

Hi John,
according to the woman who sold it to me, she got it from a farm
at Saginaw.
I have looked into the Saginaw Webpage trying to find some old Pics
of the City by those years of 1860 , but my search was not so succesful ::)

I think this man had besides a farm, because he wrote this :
" Engrafted the Orchard with following kinds of Scion,s...
all the trees marked 1 are yellow harbest ....
"""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""" 2 are Shattuck Winter etc.
And so it goes on.....
He has sold tons of butter, potatoes, pork etc. He also let shoe some horses of his.
Reading it is like been back in their time..... :icon_study:
Simple things - simple life  :coffee2:

Hello Detectingfreak,
Thank you - It is a great piece of history. Many after 1870 pages are written not in ink
but in pencil and it faded away a little through the years. It really a pleasure to have that
old writtings in one's hands.
I will keep it together with my 1881 Great-great-grandfather's ledger.
Regards,
Mike

Perhaps you could investigate the ledgers to determine any unpaid debts.

Then you could send the living relatives a copy of that ledger page/entry when you sue them.

Sometimes you are as weird as your avatar and quote represent.

Ram - I am from Saginaw, Michigan and lived there my most of my life. I know that area like the back of my hand and I also know most of the history. In fact, I studied local history in college. If there is anything you would like to know about the area - let me know. I have dozens of books with old photos of Saginaw as well. The house I grew up in and the one where my parents still live was built in 1863. It is a large 3 story victorian home in Saginaw City.

How strange it is that you found what is a rare handwritten ledger from my hometown and you are in Germany? Very nice find! Please tell me more about it if you get a second,

Ian

Hello Ian,
if you choose to post here a pair of those historic Pics of Saginaw
It would be very interesting to see them too.
For example some panorama of the town and its outskirts as well.
Thank you
HH.
