that Seated may be a cast copy, don't see many struck coins break like that.

That's possible H almost a similar look as lead or pewter ,not subjected to the environmental elements . If , I didn't realize the source I might have tossed it the the scrap bucket tested coin grade silver , a friend of mine swears it was an eight reale . She sees a cross , I don't see one , I am thinking it was early US bust coins and British pence , if they only knew what a Draped bust silvers would be worth < red book

The 1804 (which is really not an 1804) has an interesting story, here's a bit:

An 1804 Silver Dollar holds the world record price for a coin at public auction -- $4.14 million. 1804 Silver Dollars have been the subject of television programs, radio talk shows, the subject of books and, unfortunately, the subject of spectacular thefts. It is a widely counterfeited coin, with some of the counterfeits being regarded for years as genuine due to a failure of their owners to have the coins examined by third party certification services.

Ironically, this, the most famous of all American coins and perhaps all the coins in the world, is a fantasy issue.

None were ever intended for circulation. All were struck at a much later date, (1834 and up) and some, but not all of the coins, were minted by the US government. Others appear to be unauthorized issues struck by enterprising Mint employees.

It's 1804 , Mr. Silversmith says to his apprentices , OK lads , Let us melt some of these new Philadelphia mint coins to make some knives and spoons

Would the 1933 St. Gaudens hold that highest price record (at least for an American coin)? It sold for over $7 million at auction. I don't know if any foreign coins have fetched more than that. Of course, the 1794 PCGS SP66 dollar sold for more than the '33 St. Gaudens in a private transaction. What a beautiful coin that is.

Yeah I posted an old quote there, I think that $7M sale was of one given by the mint to a middle eastern sheik.
A recent story of a new york jewelers family who found several 1933 DEs in his safe ended with the jury declaring them stolen property, and thus being returned to the guvvamint

Surely the jeweler did not spirit them out of the mint, they were purchased from those who did. (there is now talk of prosecutions for the owners family)
what a shameless moneygrab by the feds, same vein as Von Nothaus's arrest and conviction for counterfeitting & 'A unique form of domestic terrorism'
I think they confiscated $7M in precious metals when they raided his operation.
When the 'Liberty' mint was in operation, I was very interested in their product.
(which by the way look nothing like a US dollar,
especially since they are .999 )
Inexpensive Silver, a return to currency with real value, struck coinage around spot price. Gotta love that.

I've often wondered what things were like in 1965 (my birth year) when they stopped issueing silver, was there a massive hoarding and run on banks before the clad issues came out?
I know I would have been there
I keep all 1965 quarters that I get in change, seems like there's a lot of them.
