Found this Chicago Milwaukee & Saint Paul Railroad padlock on Monday. The dust cover was stuck in the open position but as soon as I removed some dirt from under it it snapped shut right away and the spring is still strong - has lots of snap left in it. I was pretty happy as it's my first RR padlock dug since starting this hobby last year.
Found detecting in a pasture in 73. Just the lock, the dime fail out from behind a cabinet in a house I was remodeling.. Put it in for scale..Nothing else found that day.. Never to this day have I found anyone that could tell me anything about the lock. Any info would be appreciated, thanks for looking..
It's a rare one. A patent padlock by Dr. Solomon Andrews, Perth Amboy, New Jersey. Patented 1840. It probably dates from 1840-1865. I believe it is the 3rd oldest padlock patent in U.S. history, ignoring a handful of "X-Patents" which were lost when the patents office burned down in 1836.
Seems like my last reply didn't go through - so trying again.
