How large? Put a ruler or quarter next to it to see how large.

My guess, this maybe trunk hardware - a lock of sorts. Round holes are where it would screw onto the trunk. a lock would go through the loops in the center.

Just my opinion. Nice find btw!

Looks like a cover plate for a lock. The two tabs were probably for a flap that covered the keyhole.
