I'm going hog hunting in two weeks. What kind of marinate have you got on the hams? I plan on smoking the hams on my pig assuming I get one. Monty
Forgot to ask, where did you go hunting for that rascal. Would love to see his tusks. What calliber did you use? I bought a .45-70 on a SMLE action just to hog hunt but it needs a set of sights before I can use it. Found out my host use a .25-06 and it brings them down cleanly. Was sure wanting to see how a big old lead 450 gr. flat point bullet would do on a hog but guess I'll wait until next time. So I am taking my 6.5X55 Swede I built on a 48 Mauser action. Really looking forward to it. Monty
I did not marinate or brine. I like mine kind of plain! I used chopped garlic and onion, Olive oil, Cracked black pepper and lawry's seasoned salt. Smoked at 225 to 250 for about 8hrs using oak. the meat thermometer said 160 when I took them off and let them rest for about 20 min. I had to put them in the oven for about 45 min though as they were a little to rare even for me ! They were about 12 lbs each and were awesome! I have a book that has many rubs and mops called "Smoke and spice" it is a great book to use as a guide for smoking.
Looks like a big hole in the end of that bore, Monty...
I was thinking the rifle might be a Savage 99, but wasn't quite sure... I'll guess it's .45 caliber...
maybe 44/40 or 44 mag? 45 long colt?
nice hog........mighty fine..... I'll bet that was some sweet meat.......looking at the rifle it looks like a marlin 30/30 now that we have all guessed at the make rifle .........tell us what it it is......just dieing to know.
Sorry, I missed that question! It is an old Savage .300 99F.
Excuse my ignorance Edde but what the heck would I do with a staple gun? I was looking for one earlier today to staple up some targets to site in the muzzle-loader!
Out on a ranch, the manager's wife offered me a 30.30 to shoot a boar running along a fence line.
Do you want him? she said.
Nah... I had other plans of using my revolver, later.
So she let the dog after him, nipping at his hind quarters for a bit.
He turned his head at the dog and we heard him yelp, the boar blasted through the fence wire and the dog came back to the vehicle.
That one swing of his head had laid open the dog's side with a big gash.
Hindsight.
Same ranch, months later...
Inexperienced pilot flew the owner in to the grass strip.
Discovered pigs had rooted across it, too late.
Busted up the aircraft and put 'em both in the hospital.
Grain farmer up north a ways had a problem with hogs.
They just about put him out of business, rooting up his fields.
