Fences like that I saw in Tn. were locally called "Slave Fences" and were erected around fields with the rocks that were cleared from the feild site.

It looks to be a bridge....that runs across a creek/stream on moms land. Im thinking bridge because of the hole. Theres no pipe of any kind thru it. Her house was built in 1900 so its gotta be at least that old...maybe. Gonna try and get some info from her neighbors that have lived here all their lives...in their 60s now. Maybe they know some history on it.

Another pic......

I'd be metal detecting all around that, it does look like a bridge.. Maybe it was used as a wishing well on the side & there is a gob of silver coins down int that water..... :o

This is in Randolph County....home of the Hoover Hill gold mine...about 10 miles to my northwest. There were other gold mines in the county along with some silver mines.

Seen plenty of stone fences like that in the woods in the Carolinas. They are now woods, used to be rice fields. This could be a water gate type dam thingee for flooding the fields.

The berms also served as territory markers. One plantation from the next.
