Spent some time this morning playing with my telephoto lens. I sat in the car for a blind, with the heater and radio on, and snapped about 70 pictures. The birds move rather fast for an old coot to keep up, so I have a couple of pictures of where birds were, which I won't bother to share. Actually these few pictures are the ones that turned out the best.

These are wonderful. I don't get to see that many birds down here. Blue jay, doves and sparrows. Used to be a bunch of cardinals, but don't see them anymore.

I used a Nikon 5100 with a 55 to 300MM lens. Can't say I photo shopped the pictures, but I did brighten them up a bit, pictures were dark because it was a dull, overcast morning, but the automatic feature on the camera worked great, light enough for no flash, so there was enough light for the 300MM lens, and no harsh shadows. I also trimmed the excess from around the birds using a Corel Photo program. With my old eyes I could never get that sharp focus without the automatic feature on the camera. I love it.

Nice shots Bos'n!

That 55-300mm is a good lens, but as you can see in the
full sized pics there is some graininess in the image. My guess
is you shot those pics from 30 yds. or more?

It's an unfortunate result of using the right lens, but still
being too far from the subject. I have the 70-300mm Nikon
for my D90, and found the same results.

That lens can really shine when the subject is closer, and
you can use the lens to frame the image you want.

Did a little more processing on one of the pics (best one IMO)
and hopefully gave the the little guy some more realistic color.

Gotta love Bluejays! They're a complete PITA most of the
time, but they seem to know when they're on camera..:icon_scratch:

Dizzy, You done good on that picture, I'm not very good at touching up photos in the computer, but you really did bring the colors out more, and I think even put more life in the little critters eye.

We might not have birds much longer. They have avion flu in some chickens just 20 miles north of Roseburg. West Nile has wiped out the magpies over east of the mountains. Used to be Magpies by the thousands, the last time I was there if you saw two a day you were lucky.
