The Wolf Creek fight was the biggest intertribal battle ever on the plains. A couple of years earlier the Kiowas had surprised and pretty much wiped out the Cheyenne Bowstring Society warriors. They were still patting themselves on the back when a couple years later the Cheyenne and Arapaho worked up the nerve to conduct a revenge raid, and they exacted vengeance. Lot of people on the Kiowa side of the fight. Not long after that, all these people made peace more or less with each other as a bigger enemy had showed up in their country. The Babbs Switch school house fire is one of the worst tragedies in Oklahoma history. Candles on a Christmas tree caught the tree on fire and people were trapped in the building. The schoolhouse was about 5 miles south of Hobart, OK and the buried the folks, at least what they could recover, in the Hobart Cemetary. In those days there was no 911 or rural fire departments, and there was little hope for the victims once the fire started.

Thanks for the post, RGINN. Having been born in Coalgate, OK (Texan since 1957) I find OK history fascinating.
