The Green-wood Cemetery in Brooklyn NY. It was established in 1838 and is over 400 acers with 560,000 permanent residents, including Leonard Bernstein, Boss Tweed, Charles Ebbets, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Louis Comfort Tiffany, Horace Greeley, Civil War generals, baseball legends, politicians, artists, entertainers and inventors.
The battle of Long Island (1776) was fought across from the grounds of this cemetery.

Great photo's. Thanks for sharing. Like a History Book, our old cemeteries are hallowed ground and tell quite a story of our people and our countries past.

Oh yeah. Those old Gothic revival homes, architecture and cemeteries seem to go without saying there's spooks involved. I'll try and post some photos of the old Denver pioneer cemetery some time. I go by it once and awhile. It's the oldest cemetery in Denver. It's pretty run down and looks as if it was once on a beautiful hill by the Plate river, but now it's never watered and is surrounded by power plants, oil refineries and grubby rail yards.

very interesting , on the subject of old cemeteries , I have one located close to where I live...no one seems to know anything about it . the few stones that are still in place date to the late 1700's, the rest of the stones fell over and got piled up in one corner of the cemetery those dating to the late 1800's...2 questions , how would I go about finding any info and I think I know the answer to my next question , is it ok to detect in a cemetery ?

If you can read the names, you can look them up on familysearch.org or ancestry.com. Also, contact the county where it's located and see where the historical birth and death certificates are kept and if you are able to look through them. Some counties have historical societies where you can get information.

As far as detecting goes, that seems to be a big no no. Although, I confess I detected mine just so I had a set area to try and figure out how to use my metal detector. Just once. Found a beer can and shotgun shell.

I do find it sad that Lost & hidden items in them will stay there due to
social Mores. the Treasures & Their Stories must be many.

I think it's supposed to be the Archangel Michael. I can't see the gesture very clearly, but I don't think it's the gesture you're referring to, haha. Typically Christian icons' hands are held in such a way as to spell Christ in Greek.
