Also , I never would have forgiven myself if I had severely hurt or killed this friend.

very cool, I nearly crashed my truck the other day missing one. 2nd time this year I almost hit a painted turtle, both times I stopped and transported them to safety.

That reminds me of a woods hunt last year where I dug a frozen frog in hibernation, so glad I didn't hit him with the shovel. After extracting the target (a silver 2 reale), I carefully buried him where he was found.
