Decided to take a before pic of the latest project. Actually it's a "during" pic. The head has been rebuilt and the pistons and sleeves arrived via UPS yesterday along with the rest of the rebuild kit. A friend of ours is familiar with tractor rebuilds so the whole thing is getting fixed up including the hydraulics; may even do some repainting. Gonna convert to 12 volt also. It's a 1950's Farmall. It was just sitting on my son's property so we decided to make it something usefull. It has a disc attachment and a scraper so we should be able to put in a BIG garden next year. If all works out, I will post the "after" pic. Probably doing a tractor wheelie! ;D

Be careful on that tricycle. Looks like you're on some pretty flat ground though. You just don't see too many of that style around here. Too many hills :P . Does it have spin-out wheels?

I'm thinking the same way for next year...Bigger tractor, bigger garden/

What shape was the crank in?

Exactly what I wondered. I supposed he knew, was being optimistic, or hoping for the best. :P

When I first saw it, I thought 'oh no I'd hate to split that thing'.

Re: Tractor rebuild

Some stuff we just won't know about 'til there's a fire in the hole. We were told the hydraulics didn't work but we think that problem is already solved after finding an incorrectly installed gasket. We'll see.

Man o' live! Packerbacker... Just Look at that tall piston! an 4 rings? It's gonna run forever!

Looks like you're doing a nice in-frame job.
Cross-hatch on the liners looks beautiful!

Will it be possible for you to change the rear main bearing seal?
or you just gonna see how it goes?

I LIKE old iron!

Best,
rmptr

Re: Tractor rebuild

We're changing front and rear seals. We already have the front end, including the front wheel, pulled away from the frame to see if we can get a puller in close enough to pull the front seal without removing the front end entirely. We are replacing the axle seals also. Don't know yet how much of it will be repainted. The job just kinda snowballs; you know how it goes. :tongue3:

Re: Tractor rebuild

LoL!

I forgot about the axle seals, myself! Good idea!
Many of the old tractors have well oiled shoes...
Ha Ha! Sometimes it's almost like you go faster when pushing down on the pedals!

I've seen more than a few people pressure wash equipment after a rebuild,
then toss some old blankets as needed over things here and there and spray paint
with a cup gun. Then, some guys used a cheapo $10 airbrush to clean up things here
and there with the same paint thinned a bit more. It makes a big difference.

What fun project!

Best,
rmptr

Re: Tractor rebuild (little update)

Got the engine all rebuilt except for rear seal. We have since torn off EVERYTHING on the frame to sand, primer and repaint. We may even change the hydraulics to make it better than new. Gonna take a while.
