2 newbies here. We just got our first metal detectors from KellyCo (Garrett AT PRO and Garrett ACE 250). My son and I live in Las Cruces, NM. Anybody out here that can show us the ropes?

Worldtalker is right. I found an empty bag of cheetos in my grandma's backyard from 1986. The bag still had its price tag of 69 cents. I was born in 85. It was a cool find.

I recommend you air test your detectors with assorted coins so you can become more familiar with your machines and the tones that ring up on each type of coin. This will also allow you to see the max depths certain coins can be detected. Dig everything until you feel comfortable to discriminate certain signals. Too bad I live to far away or else we could go out today and do some training as we detect. Good Luck and Happy Hunting

first things first --know that with the ace 250 that gold items ,pulltabs and nickles will all fall into the same "block"---- a ace 250 is a fine machine if you are willing to be a "dig all signals type of person" (to avoid the slightest chance of missing any chance of finding gold) ---however that said you will dig lots of crap for every bit of gold found ..after having a ace 250 and finding some good stuff -- I wanted to get more "picky" and thus moved up to a delta 4000 * with a 0 to 99 numbers display ( 99 "numbers" vs 12 blocks on the ace 250)--thus 8 times more "slots" to sort out a item's "electrical conductivity level" into --which is how a detector figgers out exactly what its found --thru its electrical conductivity level -- the more slots or numbers the finer the sorting -- most pulltabs on a 4000 come up as a 60 --10 kt gold rings 58 --14 kt gold ring 67 --thus you avoid the bulk of pull tabs --sure now and then you will get a pulltab that reads 58 but its a lot less pulltab digging than with a 250..thus you time is more productive in general due to less trash digging..

ps the machine isn't lying * it just can not sort fine enough with a mere 12 blocks to sort items into due to the fact that the "electrical conductivity level" of a piull tab ,a gold ring and a nickel are so close to one another . so you have to get a bit better machine that can sort finer.. which was in my case the delta 4000 ($279)
