I'm from northwestern Ohio, Hancock County. My Grandmother influenced me to be a treasure hunter and rock hound. Also, my dad loved to walk woods, explore caves, work on old buildings, and got permission from many farmers to search old trash piles on their properties. He mostly brought home old bottles and some coins. So I've gotten treasure hunting from both sides of my family. I've now invited my three sons in on this and they love finding old things buried in the dirt. Our most recent adventures have begun by excavating areas of our yard (we moved into our house 3 years ago), that were meant to be gardens, landscaping, or holes to plant trees. We ended up with excavation sites fit for three boys under the age of 10 before anything could be done about planting. The boys quickly found out that every shovelful of this property is full of "treasures" (mostly trash or leftover building fragments from the last century buried in our yard). The farmer next door also allows us to roam his fields to find rocks to put into our landscaping, where we also find interesting "treasures". We have not invested in a metal detector, but I don't think it would be very useful with as much as we have buried below us. We've found everything from floors of bricks to foundation rocks, rusty shop tools to children's game pieces, silverware and ice skates . . . it's been interesting.

Welcome to the party. I tend to think that a metal detector, even a low end, would help you out tremendously. I like the idea that you have your kids kicking rocks and dirt around too. Good Luck and Happy Hunting your place. Keep up the wonderful adventures for them kids.
