REEF2.JPG This is a great forum. I have been reading it off and on for some years but never posted because of where I used to live for 23 years…being Belize. I moved there in the late 80’s when I was 27 yrs old. Set myself up in the diving biz on Ambergris Caye. The first thing I unpacked was my smuggled in u/w detector!

Treasure hunting was my main passion outside of std Caribbean life and work (diving/fishing/drinking/diving/fishing/drinking) and I had a great time and could write a short book on adventures in that country’s reefs/atolls and jungles. I teamed up with the resident treasure hunter/historian from the gitgo so I was fortunate to have been given the ‘accelerated course’ to get me up to speed while funding our adventures as he was always broke like a real treasure hunter.

Most of the time I spent was underwater looking for and researching 1600-1700 wrecks. It was tough going on those reefs but we did find some interesting wrecks, artifacts and coins etc but didnt get rich on the motherload other than in the memories. I also spent time on some wild buried hoard searches and even witnessed the evidence one hoard that had been recovered on a caye. Actually I saw two coming to think about it..one was a small chest and the other was buried in olive jars.

There is one chest down there that hasnt been found that was seen in the late 70's by some lobster divers guys I knew very well. It was half covered up on a coral patch back then. I would lay my nuts on a platter that its still right there. It is in about 12 ft of water (used to be a small caye there but a hurricane in the 1700's washed it away. I launched 2 - 2 weeks trips to find it and both times all my electronics went haywire so I used the misfortune to thoroughly map the zone as I figured it wouldnt be visible after 25 years and a few storms. I never went back as I got tied up in business and another treasure diversion.

I moved back to my original stompin grounds in south west oregon 5 years ago. I had to leave my cannons anchors and maya artifacts with the house I sold as I was all 'grey area' stuff so no way I was bringing it thru us customs!. Now I am finally re-adjusted to this regulated way of life. But I miss treasure hunting and look forward to finding something to search for in this area that has some history, significance and reward but on land and not in this freezing cold water…!

Anyhow my treasure bug has reared its ugly head again....hah.
