Hunted an old baseball field today. This spot has given up 6 silver coins from the 1930's to 1950's, 3 IHC's from the 1800's and an 1830's two piece button! Quite a date range of finds. But today, I beat all those relics by 50 years. I found a late 1700's hat (or possibly knee) buckle.

It's a very small brass buckle, measuring only 1 1/8" by 1 3/4". Didn't find the tongue and chape, but they were probably iron and rusted away. I actually found the exact buckle on page 111 of Ross Whitehead's "Buckles 1250-1800". I couldn't save the image, so I did a screen shot of the page with the buckle. Pretty cool find and only the third 1700's buckle I've ever found.

Assuming it's pinned on the length, I'd say it's a damn sweet hat buckle. That's a really nice find and one that's on my list.

I have a hard copy of the Buckle book, here ya go!

Yup, the spindle holes are on the short sides, which means it was pinned on the length.

Thanks for the much nicer photo from the book!
