Button I.D.

[VTColonialDigger]

I found this little button on the side of a hill next to an old road built in the mid 1700s. When I found it I dismissed it "just a cool little button", but recently realized it could be older than I thought. (originally thought mid 1800s) any ideas on what the age, use, etc. of this button is?

Better photos would help. Is it brass or pewter? Any backmark or design on the back?

I'm not exactly sure what type of metal it is but it is a dark grey (guessing pewter) and not a green color, as in the case of brass. Will get some better photos up when I get a moment. Thanks!

Might have something special, clearly marked on the front. 1 piece construction and no backmark could certainly place it late 1700s. In focus pictures are a must

So I finally got some time to take some photos, but could not get any clear ones. So what I did was I made a drawing of the button instead. In this photo the small circle you see is the size of the actual button (My drawing is double sized). I compared the drawing and the actual button and the design is pretty much identical.



I am pretty sure this button is pewter

Try natural light. That always helps. Sometimes I use a magnifying glass, if my phone isn't able to get a closer shot. A lot can be learned from the design on the front- or writing on the back.
