neat piece, looks like they found a rock with a fossil inclusion that popped out and worked around it to make something useful,a smart shortcut to drilling,i saw a pendant that was made that way at one of the shows

I doubt it's a Pipe mouthpiece. Most of the Pipes had wooden or bone Pipe Stems on them. It looks to me like a large Bead of some kind. Like Jeff said though, that hole is natural and they just worked the stone around it. I highly doubt they had a way to make a square hole through stone.

Very nice piece though. Very unique.

Thanks for the opinion! How ever I have seen a lot of rocks and have never seen a naturally occurring square hole in one. There is no doubt holding it you hand it was man made, you can even see scratch marks on the inside....how did they do it?I do not know that :dontknow:

I'd guess they scooped it out since it's soapstone.
Like Steve said "very unique."

Is it soap stone?I have never seen black soap stone....just asking?Hmmm, wonder how easy it would be to "scoop" out a square hole in any rock :icon_scratch:Thanks!
