Leather bag.

Your item is not an old,old indian bag. You can tell by how the white paint is flaking up in little patches. If it was made long ago, the artisan would have used a animal fat based pigment (not a more modern chemical based paint) which would penetrate the leather and not just surface coat the leather. Your bag may date from the 1940s to the 1960s. I would still hold on to the bag.
