Axes?

Found a uniface grooved ax or one in the making. It's got pecking all through the groove. It also has a small impact fracture at the bit so I'm assuming it was used how it was. Also the site I was on is know for its little celts. Some have been only two inches. I know this from an article written about the site in an archeological journal. I'm pretty sure that's what this is. What do you all think?

I just wanted to toss this out there about your first piece.
I don't think those are pecking marks...rather..just the more porous interior of the stone after the outer rind was ground or even worn away...with some added erosion.
Unlike knapping stone...where percussion flaking was done with follow through of the strike.... " locally" shell was broken down for tools and food quite a bit.
Striking a shell to have a controlled break was done with more of a snap of the wrist and often done with a tool that looked like this.
Just thought I'd post because of how similar they appear.

Usually I wouldn't buy I gotta disagree with ya there. I have alot of artifacts that were pecked down and it all looks like that. My perfect ax has the same marks.

On the first one the bit damage is newer than the rest on the stone. It is a lighter color. Still a keeper.

I think your first piece is either a maul or axe preform. It looks more like the natural stone was altered to be hand friendly, than a groove. I guess more of a handle than a groove. I gotta look at the pics again. I like it!

At second look, I see a war club or tomahawk. I've been working on a post for these for a week or so now. Often these would be hafted near the stones natural state. Yours has quite a bit more work on it than most of mine. They are often sharp enough to be mistaken for axe heads, however, they aren't durable enough to take a tree down. An enemy, well, he will drop like a ton of bricks. Here is one of mine similar to yours.



Water patina has covered the majority of visible work. You can see this piece has been altered to fit in a Celt like haft, but can be removed from the haft as fast as it was put in. I'm thinking that's what you have.

Lol! I'm the same way. I'll never be called a fool for throwing an artifact away.

Now I havent seen too many but there is a artifact called a Masher and it was hand held. I found one one time and thought geofact so I gave it to a guy I knew and low and behold he saw one at a show and bought it. I know this cause he showed mine and his side by side to rub it in on me for giving it to him. Just a thought.

That's the reflection off of the glass case that makes it look like a groove. Any way, we're hi jacking this guy's thread. Sorry!!
