Cleaning pottery

I understand my pottery is most likely not actual artifacts but need to know how to clean built up dust and residue with out damaging the pottery. Would anyone know how to do so?

Hi Penny, I have been a clay artist and potter on and off for 30 years now, Your pieces look like they may be all in the earthenware category, low fired, and much like that of a flower pot hardness. The glazes also look hand painted with low fired glazes. I recommend that you make up a mild solution of dishwashing liquid soap and water. Use a soft cloth or sponge, gently wipe residue from surfaces. Maybe start with small circular motions on an area of the pottery that will not be as noticeable such as closest to the bottom. In case the glaze or "paint" detail starts to be removed, I would stop and not clean. Professional restoration on pottery can be very expensive and would not be warranted unless it was deemed to be a true historically significant piece. Many collectors actually like the patina of heavy use, you are just fine leaving your collection as it is. Is there a thread on here that discusses Native American pottery? I have a piece I had a question on.

If it's an artifact this entire forum is the right place if its modern made someone here might have some info I'm not sure

I inherited pottery and some has signatures on the bottom along with tribe and location. But a few pieces along with four rings have either initials or no markings at all. Those pieces I'm not sure if modern or older or from Mexico.
I've had these pieces for so many years and never really explored the history of them. Sites like this help a great deal.
