Okay - my hopes aren't too high on this one, but here it is anyway.
This was found on the shore of Grand Lake, New Brunswick, which is a area fairly rich in artifacts (although nowhere close to the densities found in the mid-west US). I've read that New Brunswick, which is only 20% smaller than Maine, never had more than about 3000 individuals pre-contact. That's equivalent to an old village on the Mississippi. That said, there is a late archaic cemetery consisting of 60 burials (Cow Point) about a 15 minute drive away from where I found this.
The bedrock in the area is red clay shale without much harder stone around.
The piece seems to be pecked/pitted in certain areas, and there is also an area with parallel lines (next to my finger in the photo below). However, there is no difference in texture / wear at the business end.
It just seems to fit real nice in the palm of the hand....
