Mortar?

Had another good morning in the creek! I wanted to get some opinions on this rock that the land owner found in the same creek last weekend. It looks like a mortar but the bowl isn't smooth. I would think that if it were a mortar the bowl would be nice and smooth from grinding. Unless they were pecking in it?

What do you all think?

I would say that the raised part inside would suggest that it was not used as a mortar. I would say it was naturally formed by erosion. Looks like a small rock rotated clock-wise creating the depression. But it looks like you found a couple nice points.

That "bowl" looks like it just needed an ancient to find it. They would of been thrilled cause it wouldnt of needed much work to finish it. You are scoring on those points must be one of those creeks nobody looks in but you. Some people are scared to get their feet wet, lucky for you.

You are killing it in the creeks. The white one looks like a nice snapped base piece. Where are you from?

I'm in southern Illinois..The last few weeks have been pretty incredible! It's been a good combination of rain and being able to get in the creek early in the morning before work. I've been starting about a half hour before sunrise with a flashlight and can get a good 1 1/2 to 2 hours in..

Get a head lamp it will free your hands and you will find more.
