I used to carve wooden duck decoys... does that mean i couldn't find a real duck ? J/K a little bit. I have no problem with people using their hands to make something , as long as it isn't passed off as ancient. In this case he didn't so kudo's to him. Personally i like it !

Nothing authentic about that one. If it is, it has been acid washed and then sand blasted.
This is one of those things that I feel at the end we will be hearing at least I fooled some of you guys on my stuff. I feel like we are a test run before things go on eBay or something? These posts just don't add up anymore.

Not a thing wrong with exercising the skills our ancestors passed down
through generations for thousands of years.
Your post was probably deleted because it broke the site rules. Really, don't
get so upset over small stuff - everyone has got their own way of going about
things, and raising your own blood pressure won't change a thing. There are
purists in every endeavor, but not everyone involved as a purist.

You can bang out a piece like the one you are showing in 10 minutes time. These metamorphic carnival fakes are everywhere now and I am glad because they are terrible and obvious. Mogi, I would like to see you make one out of gabbro or basalt.

So much negativity..I just don't get it.
In all honesty (and in full disclosure), I'm not real familiar with the
flint knapping/tool making world, but to me it seems very cool to
see a person take a regular old rock and make it into a potentially
useful tool.
The impression I get from the negative comments is that people have
done this in the past, and then pawned it off as a genuine artifact made
in ancient times. Is that correct? If so, nowhere did the OP (Mogi) say or
even imply they were going to attempt to sell it or trade it as an authentic
ancient item.
Is there so much distrust in the world today that we trust no one, or accuse
them of wrongdoing when they simply re-created an ancient tool?
Tried to make a few things myself, and in the process learned that it's not
only a skill, but an art as well. If I had made that ax I'd be damn proud of it,
and it would really stink for people to "rain on my parade" if I had posted pics
of it.
OTOH, I can see the issue it would rise for the purist collector who is deeply
involved in the sale/trade/ownership of original, ancient items. That said, it
becomes an issue when someone wants do make something fun, with no ill
intent and just for the heck of it. It's certainly not worth questioning the
integrity of another when there is no evidence whatsoever that they intend
the slightest deception.
Which leads to...it's really not worth getting worked up over.

On your suggestion, I did just that.
My impression? Mogi is having a great time while you all get your knickers
twisted up like the ends of a '60's doobie.
I do understand the issue of credibility, however without further, hands-on
evaluation there is no method of determining if an item is recently made
or authentic artifact. Therefore, you are questioning a persons integrity
without evidence.
No matter if it's fly fishing, bowhunting, golf, etc. there are always purists,
and such issues as others may deem of little consequence, are major issues
in their world.
As a suggestion you can always block the posts of someone you find distasteful,
or you can just quit getting sucked into ridiculous discussions that will do nothing
more than irritate the crap out of you and ruin your day. Or, you could just get over it.
I do see both sides of the issue, but if ya can't do anything about it, and Mogi's not
going to share the information you want, then there is little else you can do but
let it go and move on.

very simply put, it is the difference between reproductions...items made to imitate and celebrate native american culture and the art of flint knappng......and forgeries....items made to deceive and fraud in order to profit or sham.
There are a number of very talented folk on this site that recreate all sorts of stone implements...but they do it 100% above board and honestly...and may I add inexpensively. These folks also KNOW what they are looking at having handled all sorts of stone and bone. It's like this...you (we all) have an area we have an expertise in, it may be mechanics, engineering, geology, teaching, baset weaving...whatever....and when you talk to someone that is pretending to share the knowledge you HAVE...well, you KNOW.
this forum is for learning about and sharing what we find...trying to expand an interest we all have in cultures that predate our own present one. If the folks here say (for instance) the hole is natural...then it most likely is.
