Circular stone disk with drilled hole. Used for what purpose?

Are you sure its drilled and not a fossil that fell out, does not appear to be drilled from what I can see, but pictures are poor quality, out of focus and can't be blown up far enough to see inside hole.

No, I’m not 100 percent certain on the hole. At a glance it has the tapered edge on both sides with slight spiral lines leading downward from the top.







There is a crystal protrusion on the back side near the hole similar in size to the hole. Are you thinking this hole is the remnants of a similar crystal protrusion

The hole is very similar to the hole in this pendant but on a smaller scale.

Could it have been used as a fishing weight? Heavy, to hold in a current. The hole looks drilled to me.

I suppose it could have been a net weight, or something similar. The black markings and what seems to be crushing scars on top lead me to believe it’s something else. A base to start a fire on perhaps, or a platform to melt some substance on like resin and charcoal

Cool natural rock. Not all rocks with holes in them are artifacts. I could walk the beach and a couple of creeks here and within an hour be able to send you twenty, thirty examples.
Keep on looking though.

Thanks for the reply justonemore. I know that holes occur naturally, I find them all the time. Context is important though. i try not to toss stuff to the side when I find it near a debris field etc.. looking has been pretty tough around these parts but I'll keep trying.

I must admit, in your second group of photos, the hole has the counter sunk look of drilled holes. It's faint, but can see what look like very weathered drill rings. Might be blackened by fire, as you suggest. If the hole is drilled, might be a problematical for which usage might be conjectured, but might remain unsolved.

The Seminole indians used stones for fishing net sinkers like a lead line on a net. Where state were these found in? I know of some found in Florida.

I would think those net stones to be smaller. I have some somewhere around here. It's also not a cooking rock cause the hole is too small to get a stick into and there is no major pitting from rapid heating and cooling. I think it's a base/plate to stir up glue like resin, sap, charcoal and ocher. The last step in making arrows

I don't think a NA would go to all the trouble drilling a hole through a rock just to toss it in a lake as a weight. Plenty of natural rocks with shapes that could be wrapped with line and used for a weight. Just my thoughts on the issue. I also don't think this particular stone is drilled by man, it looks natural to me. That being said it is curious enough to consider.
