A tip for new people and maybe a few older detectors not familiar with new technology.
Let's say you're driving along a country road and see an old falling down/overgrown house or barn. There no other building that could be a house. Sounds like a good spot for lost treasure! But who owns it
Pull over and write down a few things. The more you collect now, the better chance you can find the owner without going back for more information.
State, County, and Road name. OK. Now get an address off a mailbox nearby and note how far/direction from the area you're interested in. (could help in very rural areas). If you can't get an address, get the Road names before and after. Once you get enough information that you think you could find it on a map you are done.
Now the detective part of detecting. Boot up the confuser..er Computer. Use Google search: GIS County Name. Some Ohio Counties share the same Website, some have their own. Use the map to find the area you saw on the road. From here you will get parcel numbers and their owners. Sometimes a simple search for that name is all you need.
It's also a good way to scan areas just to see who owns them. Is it a park owned by a city, state or county or private.
