    Civil War Sites

Does anyone know of a book that details the locations of various Oklahoma civil war battles, campsites, and the like? I know Honey Springs if off limits for detecting, but I imagine there has got to be others on private land that one could possibly obtain permission?

    Hey GR,

I am one of the lucky ones that was able to hunt the Battle of Honey Springs site, legally
A friend of mine invited me to hunt it with him and some others, for the Oklahoma Historical Society.
I was really cool. I found some relics, one being a stirrup from a saddle.
Everything that we found was given to the O.H.S.. All coins found that were not of that period (including silver coins), were reburied.

You know, I think I read about that very search somewhere on the internet. I think it was an academic paper. Very interesting. What a great opportunity and experience that must have been.

Here is a cool White's "Treasure Hunting America" episode that has a guy from Tulsa (I think the owner of the local White's store), and talks about his finds, including some stuff from the Battle of Cabin Creek:

These are all listed in the OR's as well as several other items.

If you are interested in Honey Springs/Elk Creek engagement there are several other places that are surely not off limits that would pertain to the battle. You could probably get permission to detect the surrounding areas from private land owners. If you need anything looked up just let me know and I will post for you what is in the OR's for Oklahoma/Indian Territory.

    Re: Civil War Sites

No problem at all. Don't have a clue why half of them got a line through them, but you can still read them.

A good book to get is the Atlas to Accompany the Official Records of the Civil War. I think it's around $20.00 at Barnes and Noble. It has a ton of maps. Most aren't that detailed, but most are accurate.

If you need any more help just let me know. I have descriptions of each location mentioned in the OR's as well as the OR's themselves.

    Re: Civil War Sites

When I copy/pasted the list over into Word, all the lines disappeared. Weird Windows voodoo.

I actually just ordered The Civil War Battlefield Guide, that covers 384 engagements. Hopefully that will be a help as well.
