Hi all,

I'm trying to start researching some more, and I was looking at some turn of the century (1900) panoramic maps. What I'm wondering about is this area:

It now looks like this:

My questions are:
1. Was this area originally clearcut, or did the artist just not draw the trees in between?
2. If it was clearcut, why? A park? None of the maps I have of this type show parks with names, and I'm thinking the fact that it is a peninsula would make it an ideal place for picnics.

So whaddya all think?

I Say go for it !

Looks like it could definately have been used for Picnics.

IF Not by the public at least be somone.
if they didn't I would like to know why not.

I'm sure the artist didn't ignore the trees.
in your updated pic I see no water ?
is it fruther out of view ?
or filled in ?
Small Creek ? Or River Feed it ?

Here's a few more photos.

The first is of the area in terraserver, the second is an enlarged photo of the brownish area in the original photograph. I initially thought it was just a dirt parking lot, but now I'm not so sure.

That looks like it could be a great spot.
It might have been the place where all the people from those buildings would have wanted to relax for a bit.
It should definately be less trashy than the land on the outside of the creek.
Could be one of those great spots, where people socialized in the pre- pulltab era!
I'd definately go "feel it out".
Good Luck!

I have done some research in your area. Can you give me more info where this area is? I'll see what I have saved in my files or any other info I can pull up for you. If you don't want to post the location here, PM me it. Looks like a good site to MD.

I know where that spot is. Never been there, but I don't think that area has been disturbed much since that drawing. I can't find anything on any of my old maps of the area of anything there. Could be good.
Don't know what the rectangle shape is there now.
Usually anyplace along that stream is super trashy, but it's probably worth hunting.
