during the construction of Interstate 95.

The first coins were discovered on February 14th by some treasure hunters in an excavation area just north of Dock Street. In the Eighteenth century this was where the Dock River joined the Delaware River. In 1671 the Blue Anchor Tavern was constructed on the site. In 1691 Thomas Budd rebuilt the tavern and also erected some houses in the area. On February 14, 1975 a group of 178 Wiliam III cast counterfeit halfpence was discovered in a 10x10 foot area of newly unearthed dirt. Within a few days the area was closed due to the rapid pace of the construction.

The landfill was removed to three local dump sites (on Weccacoe Avenue, Third and Oregon, and Third and Callowhill). Coins continued to be found at the dump sites for several months including many additional William III cast counterfeits. In all 463 coins were uncovered including a 1785 Immune Columbia/Constellatio Nova pattern, a 1787 New Jersey copper, several Spanish and French coins and U.S. coins dating from a 1794 penny to a 1907 indian head cent. The listing below is limited to the British and Irish coppers found over the months. For a complete inventory see Newman and Gaspar.

good story! I'd settle for real or fake. That must have been one heck of a good time!

I wonder if these fill sites or the
area next to that part of the Highway
are Still detectable.

Out of my area,
but Maybe a lead for someone
from Philly

1975 detectors got nothing on 21st Century models
for depth & sensitivity.

Reminds me of what one of my coworkers told me when they busted all the local bars with poker machines and hauled them all to the landfill. He was one of the trash haulers that took them into the dump...and they were still full of money.

The FBI was onhand when they bulldozed the machines and coins went everywhere and noone was allowed to retrieve any of them. The Feds stayed on site til they were well burried under dirt.
Propabaly way out of a detectors reach by now.

Cool story!. Yeah Jeff, the area right under the ramps looks pretty good. I just keep thinking about how many times and how deep that land was bulldozed while building the highway. I am going to follow up on this by taking a drive down there just to scope it out first. I'm only 25 minutes from that location. Should I ask for permission? and if so, who do I ask?
Thanks,
Hoof

one of those sites I don't know answers.

If the Land belongs to the Highway Department,
asking will get a no

if owned by the city, most likely asking will get a no

Nobody will take responsability in areas like that.
just try to show their authority, if questioned.

if seen detecting these areas without permission
it would depend. Would they accuse you of
undermining the Integrity of the Highway, causing it to
slide off the earth and go hurling into space ?
or just mind their own Buisness ?

Is it an area where Bums & Kids play ?
is it very well kept ? all things that the answers should
be able to tell you if you should be able to help yourself.

maybe the closest Private Landowner would be the place to go
or even ask about the spot your after.

good luck !
Get pics of the area if you can.
