Pete.. Most everyone here (that I've seen) tends to attempt to post images that are way to large for viewing.. If your images raw or to many pixels, this could be why your system is locking up or not responsive.. try reducing the image size not the image quality..

This can be accomplished by using your camera's photo editing software (which should be within your camera's software disk) if you did not acquire this software, try sites like photobucket, flickr or picnik to edit, crop and resize your images.

As always.. it's great to take shots of your image at it maximum setting.. but remember to resize for posting.

PS.. you can even post off site and post a redirect to said images on the off site storage service..
