Bought some silver today

Oops on my posting to the wrong thread. My bad. Thanks for responding anyway.

My point is that the "pure play," (that is non-conglomerate) public silver mines in the US and Canada are, in my estimation, not a good barometer for the worldwide industry, as a whole.

I have no clue on private companies but would ask you, why would private companies all be profitable when many public ones are not lately?

Certainly not all private silver producers are or would be profitable, but to answer your question, for some of the reasons mentioned in my earlier post: Different geology, more favorable operating environment (regulatory, cost of labor, etc....), among others.
