Recommended research tools?

Hello all!

I've been itching to do some relic hunting locally between my hunts for Gold nuggets.
I was wondering if anyone here had any good web sites they can recommend for researching old properties (plat maps) or homesteads that "use to be".
Did a little searching and found some web sites that will sell historical Topo maps and such.
But I would like to see what homes or properties were in areas from the past.

Would the local Library have that?
Or maybe the city would have old records of it's area? And would the city let me see that I wonder?

Lots of history in Ventura CA and would love to dig some up.
Any way, just thought I would ask. Thanks

As I'm sure you're fully aware you're not the first to search for gold in California the first thing I would do is learn about the history of gold mines in your area and the towns that sprung up around them

From my own personal experience you're not going to find much that basically says x marks the spot for relic hunting.. and if you do find something fairly easy and it's readily accessible it's probably been hit already I find most folks are pretty lazy and like to do my research creatively and get myself in areas that aren't common knowledge

I've got the gold research situation in order. thanks

When I'm not out searching for Au, I'd like to relic hunt.
And no, I'm not asking for an "dig here" map either.

What I'm really looking for is old Plat maps of cities or towns.
Something that shows what the original city or town layout was like back in late 1800's early 1900's.

I can then determine if that location is still accessible or mowed over with a Mall sitting on it.
I can also find out if the property is privately held and by whom.
Then contact the owner, etc, etc.

I may contact the city and see if they allow access to old plat records.
And I will check my local Library as well.

I don't think you fully understood what I meant the point I was trying to make was your gold research is more than likely directly tied to the early development of your area if you research old mining towns of your area and their history you will find all sorts of leads.
For instance around the time gold was struck in California pineapple plantations were being built here in Florida.. By researching the old pineapple plantation history you will find all sorts of references to specific bodies of water points of land some of the first roads built excetera excetera
