I was detecting in a gold rush era part of Northern California and found this under an old oak tree. Any idea what it is? We were thinking maybe a stove but the metal isnā€™t all that thick. I also didnā€™t see any sort of handle like you would expect on a stove door. Either way it was a blast to find!

Is it cast iron or is it copper?

How thin is it?

It looks decorative, maybe an inlay for a door? A nice ornate piece, definitely has some history to it.

Itā€™s iron. Itā€™s appropriately an 1/8 inch thick, 31 inches tall and 21 inches wide.

Could it have been used as a backsplash for the stove in a kitchen? Or inside the fireplace?

Certainly possible. Iā€™m leaning toward it being part of a parlor stove at this point.

coffins were made of metal in old times, but I hate to even think of that as one
