I found this the other day. I've been told it's a French trade axe. That would make it my oldest find to date. It's missing the back inch or two where the handle would have been inserted.

Great find!

When viewing from the top or bottom, can you see an area where there is a seam where the forged iron was folded over and hammered together?

something to this effect

Are there any makers mark on either side of the blade?

Is the cutting edge in the center of the blade of offset to one side? This would indicate the difference between a felling axe or a hewing axe.

Ok here are some more pics after more cleaning. The fist one show's the space where the fold came together.

The second one show's where there is a line where the fold came together.

The last one show's the maker's mark. I can't make out any definition. It's too far gone. By the way what's left measures 6.25"x4.5" at the edge. It weighs 26 oz. That's without being a full axe. My guess is that it would have been around 8"x4.5 and weighed 2 lbs. The edge is even on each side.
