Hi All,

I'm brand new to this forum and gem hunting. I took my three children out a few weeks ago to Mulberry river in Hall County Ga to find stones to tumble and hopefully make them jewelry (I have 2 girls age 5 and 10). We found a hand full of stones, but I'm not sure i should investing in a tumbler without mowing what we have. Can anyone help identify them?

Pics are attached. I'm especially interested to know if we have any Amethyst or Citrin as they are the girls birth stones. I'm curious about the last picture of the small flat stones as well. They flake like Mica but I have never seen mica like this before.

Thanks for any help!

I would invest in Rodales guide to Rocks and Minerals. I've had mine um forever, & I still use it all the time. & it's fun to ID your finds with the kids. As far as the rocks you have, it's hard to tell by the pix, but doesn't look like amethyst or citrine anywhere. Go to your states home page & look up rocks & minerals. Should take you to a list of what is available & where to find it.

Thanks for the info. I think investing In a good rock identification book is probably a good idea.

Harbor freight runs sales on tumblers. I purchased the two barrel 6 pound on sale. Great price for young ones just getting into hobby. My son aged five loves the end of cycle check! Me too. :)
