Hi everyone,
I'm new to Coeur d'Alene, Idaho and I'm very excited about the prospect of gem hunting. I'm not sure where to go and how to get started though...
I want to find some area that I can go without having to pay for a bucket full of dirt, but I have no idea what to look for. I've been reading up on it a little, but any resources you can point me to would be fantastic.
Let me know what you think...
Thanks

Prospecting for gemstones and minerals - John Sinkankas
That's a good reference. If you can find it - get one!

Pretty much anything by Sinkakis is worth having in the library. I've been meaning to get to the star garnet beds for yeeears, but it's still on the 'to do' list. Hit Lomo pass a couple of years ago and I have to say, it ain't worth the effort. Place looks like it's been plowed by wild pigs. Also, don't under-estimate the learning that can happen after you pay for a bucket of dirt at a fee dig. I often hit up a local fee dig to get tips on places to hunt, matrix material, ground sign, etc. THEN go prospecting!
