The attached pictures were taken at a friend's cottage, of a rock pulled from Lake Ontario. We have had it sitting next to the camp fire pit for many years now, and it always sparks conversation of what it could be. We figured it was time to try to get some answers. Thoughts?

I really don't know but possibly two layers of compressed sediment which formed around a heavier rock of a completely different composition. What I am trying to say, that the rock tumbled or landed on a layer of sediment on the Lake bed pressing it downward and the sediment hardened, then another sediment layer formed over top the rock and first sediment layer, then hardened, sort of like a bulgy sandwich.

As Huntsman says it could be sedimentary rock. The split down the middle is a contact zone in the rock where harder minerals formed up between the layers. Could also be granite with the same feature. Erosion over time will have shaped the rock and removed the softer parts above and below the contact zone giving you the interesting features you see today. Similar features can be seen in sand stones in the south west where wind and rain have been the primary erosive elements.

It would be interesting to split it down the seam to what is inside of it, if anything!
