Is it flint? Photo does not do it justice it is gorgeous.

About 11 inches by 8 inches. Found 40 miles SE of Alpine, Tx in the Chihuahuan desert. Igneous, Metamorphic, and Sedimentary rocks all found in area.

Not flint... not real sure what it is from the photo. Reminds me of chalcedony but its so dark.

I had thought it was chalcedony, the local said it was flint. It is ivory colored with both a rust and black patina.

Flint will spark if you hit it with a hammer or another rock.
Looks like chalcedony to me. You might want to get a toothbrush and scrub it up a bit. chalcedony is typically a milky color, translucent . And that's what I think I see underneath the dirt.

Harder than steel, doesn't seem to spark but I only want to hit it on a flat. I think I want to display it as is so may have to try cleaning an area on the back. There are layers inside it where there are small breaks visible.

That area is none for its desert roses. Could be a worn down desert rose.
