Kids trip.... Where to go?

Hello everyone. I'm a rock hound and want to take my 4 and 7 year old on a trip this Summer rock hunting. I'm trying to come up with a great trip. Any suggestions on mines that let you dig or something similar?
What minerals are good to hunt in the Midwest? I thought about heading up towards Lake Superior and agate hunting.
Thoughts?

Along the shores of Lake Superior would be a good place for finding some nice agates!

I've found many up there in the past... and its nice that Mother Nature kind of polishes them a bit for you.

Also the weather is not too bad during the summer.... meaning not to hot.

Friendly reminder: Keep close watch on the kids at the shore... accidents do happen.

There are a lot of great places in the U.P. of Michigan, there is Kona Dolomite en masse south of Marquette, LSA's (Lake Superior Agates) all over the place but much easier to find on the beaches, Thomsonite, malachite and other copper minerals...road cuts, old mines are good places to look - if you can get up the peninsula (Houghton area), that has some good areas to look around from what I've heard.
