Hey Branwell, are you referring to the lighter dendrite-like crystals? If so, that is not the crystal form for cassiterite, from my limited knowledge. Did you taste it? They could be some form of salt. Just guessing here.

It doesn't taste like salt, but I found this on the floor of an alkaline desert, with miles and miles of huge salt flats! So you may be on to something here :)
