Geode? 20180606_123018.jpg 20180606_123026.jpg At least a foot tall, in a friends yard. He wanted to know more about it and if it's worth anything. I told him to get it out of the dirt and put it inside.

These sliced amethyst geodes are very available, such as at amethyst geodes.jpg the Tucson Gem Show, pictured here. You are right though, get it out of the sun, amethyst will fade in sunlight.

They ave been popular for a number of years. They are found, if memory serves in Uruguay. Some are HUGE.

The poor thing has been in the sun way too long. Amethyst should be a brilliant bright violet. My condolences to your friend, but I believe the value is severely diminished due to exposure.

Time for more coffee.

Nice amethyst. You geode is from the US. Very typical of amethyst crystals found in Creede CO. The geodes Kray showed are from Mexico or South America.
Some Creede amethyst has a very deep purple color at the base but almost all turn to clear at the tip.
Value is in the tens of dollars. Drive to Boulder or San Fran and you might double your money.
Tell your friend to keep it and put it on display.

Thank you EU Citizen and Bajahunter for clarifications. My reply was admittedly incomplete. I recalled seeing these at gem shows, and thought it would help him out.
