    Strange Rock up the mountain

    Hiya everyone

Found this stone a few miles up the mountain on bog land. It was beside an old drain so assuming it was dug out. Just wondering what kind of rock is it. Any ideas?

I suggest you see if you can find a mineral survey of the mountain or the area you found it. It has characteristics of a sedimentary stone though parts of it look like solid silicate. It may be something that was just dug up, as you said, but I suspect its a bit of float from the bed rock in the area.
Everyone Believes they have gold buried in the back yard... small wonder so few ever look for it.

"Gneiss, schist and granite form the bedrock of the Ox Mountains. This wild area of uplands is covered largely with blanket bog. Some parts are extensively forested, whilst others have numerous outcroppings of rock. To the north and south the land is underlain by limestones and sandstones of Carboniferous age, and is generally farmland.[5] Lead and copper mines were formerly worked in the Ox Mountains, but by 1900, the works had been long since discontinued"

From wiki, in my area it's mostly granite with some veins of quartz. It was moatly the shape which I thought was odd, as it has some 'spikey' parts. Also the color, I haven't seen any rocks that color up the mountain

I'll say with that bit of research its likely one of the sandstones for the range. The shape would be due to weathering and the coloration a combination of native colors and organics staining the stone's more porous areas. A fresh break would probably prove that and confirm the composition. Peat bogs are naturally acidic and could be the source of the weathering as some materials in sandstone will react with acids.
