A Gemologist would probably be the only one that could tell real from synthetic. Synthetic ruby was first produced in the late 1800's, so many of the rings out there contain synthetic rubies in most cases.

I just follow my nose!...where the silver and gold goes!
Minelab 5000, Goldmaster, and a few others
XRF spectrometer, Common sense.
Primary Interest:
Prospecting
Most Ruby sapphire will have inclusions in it that are a dead give away, also color fading and zoning.
A competent jeweler will be able to tell you no problem.
