I realize I may be assisting in a thread-jacking, but here goes...
Beach re-nourishment.
More like beachfront business owners subsidy.I have a long rant stored up about this, but I will spare you all the pain of reading about sediment transport and other arcane subject matter.
I do have a question that Dom and/or others may be able to answer: When the mess that they pile on top of the real beach sand erodes under big surf conditions, does it settle back out in the reef area or does it get washed back to the muck pile from whence it came?
If it is covering the reef/ledge it would seem that the re-nourishment projects are doing damage to the habitat of many kinds of assorted sea life as well as reducing the fishing opportunities for all those out-of-state fishermen that fuel the tourism industry. There might be a good argument against projects like this.
Thanks for any additional discussion.

rope:

I agree 100% that the renourishment crap is incompatible with the natural beach. It's a complicated answer, involving not just size of the grains but the shape of them. FIT has more knowledge about east coast beaches than the corps of engineers and our "coastal engineers" put together, but they are never consulted on this issue.

Our renourished beaches are disgusting, yet the politicians are proud of them. They accept the baloney they are fed about the "benefits" of renourishment without questioning anything.

Me? Well, I did my undergraduate thesis at FIT on the stabilization of Ponce Inlet. 40 years ago!

:read2: There are some unusual underwater sites, certain locations in the ocean. GE maps can do strange things sometimes. Try some other map sources and see what you come up with. Seems like Florida coastline would have no secrets left to hide with all the treasure hunters around there.

Check this out...
Archaeologists Announce Discovery Of Underwater Man-Made Wall (Very Old)
"Despite difficult diving conditions, Shieh said that a team of more than ten specialists was able to ascertain the positions of at least three of the wall sections.

The proximity of the wall to a similar structure found in 1976 suggests that it may be further evidence of a pre-historical civilization.

A three meter high underwater wall was discovered by amateur divers in waters off the nearby Hu-ching (Tiger Well) Island.

British archaeologists examined the find and proclaimed that the wall was probably made between 7,000 and 12,000 years ago.

The current find stands a mere 100 meters from the site of that discovery. "

Red Desert, I have personally seen a man made Rock wall underwater starting at a depth of 60 feet, and extending down to the drop off at 95 feet, off Clifton Pier, at Nassau, Bahamas.

I had a Marine stationed at Guantanamo, Cuba tell me of a man made Arch big enough to put a greyhound bus under on a ledge on the drop off at 110 feet. humble

Ladies gentlemen: to carry Red Desert's and Humbles data a bit further -->

"Dr. Dennis Stanford of the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History in Washington, states: "We now know that human beings learned to sail 50,000 years before the present. Mankind settled in Australia then and it was not linked by any land bridge to Asia. It could only have been reached by boat. Clearly, we had mastered sailing tens of thousands of years before America was colonized, so we should not be surprised by the idea that people took boat trips across the Atlantic 18,000 years ago" (Stanford & Bradley, 2004)

We could have descendants of ice age Atlanteans scattered throughout the massive continents of North and South America. All modern scientific theories choose to ignore the possibility of a large Cro-Magnon-populated land mass (Atlantis) lying in the central North Atlantic, which could easily have provided migrations of Cro-Magnon populations in both directions (to Europe and America) during the ice age.

There is some place in that area you mentioned, a whole city discovered under water. It is believed to have gone down in an earthquake, back during a time period of history. A couple divers brought up the most valuable, interesting artifacts once, don't remember if the divers were archaeologists or not. I think one artifact was a metal vase or pot.

Not sure, Humble but I did read on the Keysnet Saturday that a company in key Largo has purchased a paddlewheeler for parties from up north and are bringing it down the intercoastal. Just a thought.

Nothing new going on other than some pretty decent erosion. Those rocks are being worked over pretty good by the locals.

Humble,

There have been alot of UFO or USO sightings out over the ocean, some seen flying in and out of the water.Just about a week ago i saw a very bright UFO fly over my house and it wasnt a saucer or a triangle shaped ones that i have seen before. This one was cigar shaped and had 3 windows in the side i saw and it had no wings. It was identical to the one i saw in the NC mountains last year.As far as the lines you see on google earth, they could be reflections from the solar panels on the sat, some of the reflections even look like lines and shapes from a circuit board, many people think they are old cities.

a what brand of rum -- the "right" rum makes for a great eggnog --wife will not let me have eggnog anymore --causes my gout to flare up (pity) --ever try pussers "navy" rum or lambs navy rum ?

old true merchant seaman's grog recipe * water , lime , sugar and rum

--in the old days water was stored onboard ship in wooden barrels -- overtime germs and slime would grow in the barrels would make the water unfit to be drunk ---so the grog mixute was used to make it suitible to drink (the alcohol in the rum acted as a natural anti germicidal as did the acid in the limes juice ) the sugar made it sweet tasting -- the buzz of the alcohol also helped to sooth the aches and pains of a hard days work and help one sleep also the lime juice helped to prevent scurvy .
