ever try to set a plate down to eat while heeled over under way ? bowls just worked better. most of their meat was salted or dried or smoked so it was boiled to render it edible, and the juice was beneficial so why waste it . if you read an "underwater dig" the plates were made of wood some may have survived up north but in the teredo infested carribean not a chance.
them that dive will be the lucky ones !!

Re: Caribbean Pirate Life - Smokes, booze, fine dining
For the most part, pirates saw themselves as free men - just as sovereign as any nation. They believed they had the same rights as any gov't to conquer and make a life however they deemed necessary. There was a great deal of respect for each other, and they did have a code of honor. They didn't mind enjoying the fruit of their labor. This fact doesn't make headlines, so the darker side of rape, pillaging and murder always made headlines. As a result, most believe the darker side was all there was to a pirate's life. It's a shame, really. The same people who reported a one-sided view lived under (or worked for) a gov't that did these exact things under the cover of the law.
There is within the heart of every man to be free. Free from oppression. Free from tyranny. Free to see justice rule between men and not the corruption so often found by those in power. In that freedom, we can enjoy justice, mercy and a code of honor that inspires a respectable lifestyle. I know of no gov't that inspires today. I live in the real world, but in my heart I, too, am a pirate.
Live free,
Darren

Re: Caribbean Pirate Life - Smokes, booze, fine dining
Do it for a King, Queen, Emperor, or a President and become a hero and possibly a Governor.
ala Morgan
Do it for yourself/crew and be a low life pirate with a death sentence.
What's the expression;
"Kill one man and become a murderer; kill one million and become a conqueror!"
and write the laws the way you want them!
"Not just the Spanish Main, luv. The entire ocean. The entire wo'ld. Wherever we want to go, we'll go. That's what a ship is, you know. It's not just a keel and a hull and a deck and sails, that's what a ship needs but what a ship is... what the Black Pearl really is... is freedom"
Now... bring me that horizon.
Drink up me 'earties. Yo ho
Psalm 107:23-24
They that go down into the sea in ships; and make working in many waters.
They saw the works of the Lord; and his marvels in the depth. (And they saw the works of the Lord; and his marvelous deeds in the depths of the sea.)

Here's a quote from Black Sam Bellamy when he was scolding a conquered ship's captain:
"...Damn ye, you are a sneaking Puppy, and so are all those who will
submit to be governed by Laws which rich men have made for their own
Security, for the cowardly whelps have not the courage to
defend what they get by their knavery; but damn ye altogether. Damn
them for a pack of crafty rascals, and you who serve them, for
a parcel of hen-hearted Numskulls. They vilify us, the scoundrels
do, when there is only this difference: They rob the poor under the
cover of Law, forsooth, and we plunder the rich under the protection
of our own Courage. Had ye not better make One of us,
than sneak after the Asses of those villains for Employment?"
I wished I was there to hear and see it.

Want to treasure dive in gin clear waters at Jupiter!
Re: Caribbean Pirate Life - Smokes, booze, fine dining
you are....
Just look around a little...
Only the technology changes with time....
folks pretty much stay the same.... the cattle chew on grass, remain flatulent and moo
and the rats continue to guard the cheese...
Dominic Strouse Carne is on the way back to France
and the maid who serviced him will most probably
become a porn star....
whats new....
Since 1987 our Jupiter Wreck has continued to yield coins but the question, "Where's the rest of the Ship?" has remained unanswered... There are 2 layers of shipwreck scatter and we are equipping the "Enterprise" to excavate the primary treasure layer. Join with us this year!
