"Nuestra Señora de Begoña San Francisco Javier y Las Animas" Capt Teodoro Garces de Salazar lost in May 21, 1725

I hold the archival documents to this wreck and at one point it was my project. If you need more information on this wreck let me know.

    All the best,

Re: Bobadilla's latest book out in November

    Hey Chagy:
Here's a short excerpt from the book dealing with your favored prize. Good luck with that! Should be a piece of cake.

“Nuestra Señora de Begoña San Francisco Javier ” – lost in 1725

This Spanish frigate, nicknamed “Las Tres Hermanas” (The Three Sisters)
left the Canary Islands in April of 1724 bound for La Guaira, Venezuela. After unloading
her cargo the ship remained in the Caribbean for more than one year. After
taking on a cargo of cacao, sugar and tropical wood the ship set sail for Europe
under the command of Captain Teodoro Garcés de Salazar. The only registered
treasure aboard were 6,811 pesos locked in the Captain’s chest.

Strong winds forced the frigate to alter her course and sail for Hispaniola
Island. Th e “Begoña” finally anchored in front of Santo Domingo harbor on the 17th
of May 1725. Her anchor cable broke two days later and the frigate set her sails, so
she might avoid being swamped by a furious sea. As their situation became dreadful,
the ship made for a small bay with a sandy shoreline guarded on its flanks by
two rocky points. Th e entrance to this small sandy beach measured only about 100
meters (about 320 feet) in width so it’s no wonder that the “Begoña” crashed against
the rocks, broke into pieces and sank at the entrance of the small bay. Fortunately,
everybody on board reached shore. When Spanish authorities confi scated gold and
silver found under the control of the survivors, a criminal conspiracy was exposed.
More than 20,000 pesos were seized from 29 passengers onboard and it became
obvious that this amount represented only a small portion of what had been on the
ship originally. It was clear that the “Begoña” was full of contraband gold and silver
because “officially” she carried only a little more than 8,000 pesos. The Captain confessed
before the courts of Santo Domingo that he was not the owner of the frigate
as had been declared in her registry, but, that the real owner was Don Francisco
Crisóstomo, Royal Treasurer of the Spanish Crown for the Canary Islands. He
further admitted the Canary Islands to be his ultimate destination.

In spite of the fact that the frigate was lost in only two brazas of water (about
4 meters, or 15 feet of depth) and only 200 meters (around 640 feet) from shore,
the divers sent from Santo Domingo to salvage her could not recover anything of
signifi cance. Bad weather and rapidly shift ing overburden on the hull prevented a
decent recovery effort. Th e place where the “Begoña” wrecked is called “Caleta de
Caucedo” and it is about 300 meters (roughly 1,000 feet) west of the international
airport of Santo Domingo. The Las Américas airport is about 13 miles from the
    city of Santo Domingo proper.

The “Begoña” displaced 220 tons with a cargo capacity of 90 tons. She was
90 feet at the stem and 23 feet at the beam. She was armed with six large caliber iron
cannons and eight pedreros, which are smaller rail mounted swivel guns. There were
150 cannon balls stored on board as well. Eventually, even some of the passengers
confessed that the “Begoña” carried far more silver and gold than originally declared.
Over the last ten years two companies have expressed an interest in obtaining
salvage contracts on this wreck, but the Dominican government has not
granted anyone such a contract to date.

Re: Bobadilla's latest book out in November

    Hola Chagy, mi compadre!

I know very well that you own detailed information about "Begoña". "At those times" you were leader of the project and I was working for you. You know also very well why this project could not be completed (so far). I was present when you had to pay for one part of the detailed study so I fully respect that all detailed information about this shipwreck is your intelectual property, especially taking into account that it is stil "open case" and several ineterests are in play even today. Therefore I wrote about this shipwreck in my book, because it belongs to the list of shipwrecks in Dominican waters, but still with reduced detailed information.

    Everybody,
I hope that you enjoy the second edition of my book, like Terry said, you will find more information there, more photos and maps. I have to repeat it here again, this second edition would not be possible to publish without effort, time and experience of my friend Terry Armstrong. Thanks one more time for excellent job, Terry (as usually....)! Whatever question or doubt you would have guys about this book, just email me or PM me or post ithe question here.

    Regards to all,
    Lobo

It will be available on Amazon as a softback book and as a kindle ebook. I will have some copies to sell directly and so will Lubos (Bobadilla). In a month or so, it will also be available in Australia, France, England and Germany via Amazon. If you come to the Sunken Treasure Literature Club meeting at the FUN show in Orlando this coming January, I will be there with discounted copies.
