Regime Change: I'm not crying over over it nor will abase myself slobbering at the feet of the current Prime Minister begging for him to come to his senses to honor what was represented to the world back in January, 2012. However, I will go even further... to state that the current elected government of The Bahamas has proven itself unworthy to even take credit for any benefit which might result from our hard work, professional dedication and investments. Indeed, we the victims need to wake up and get out of denial and recognize the current ruling Bahamian Government for what it is...a clique of socialist based, foreigner and private enterprise hating do-nothings whose greatest ideal of accomplishment is to re nationalize the container port while breeching other existing permits and contracts in other economic sectors to favor political cronies. Once we are out of denial about what it is that we are actually dealing with however, then what both we and our Bahamian business partners need to do is identify who is running for office and throw all our support behind such persons to unseat the current ruling party and throw them out! Hearts and Minds--and Info Wars....one mind at a time until the current political bosses are unelected should be our current focus. Perry is already sagging poorly in the polls and with a small national electorate it often just takes a few dozens of votes to swing a national election in that country. Barring a miracle the only solution to our problem rests clearly in regime change and not via further groveling and pleadings. See More

I am sufficiently (& rightly) rebuked. Well said, Bonnie. My apologies. I was sort of jumping on the bandwagon here of frustration over red tape & over-tourism. These are things I know about firsthand here in Orlando.

By no means do I advocate ANY type of lawlessness. It seemed safe to say that I'd do it knowing that in actuality I never would or could. I'm the most law-abiding puritan I know, so it was more in jest, & it was very reckless for me to say it. I was definitely in sympathy mode as I tore off that ill-thought commentary. Sorry to offend!

As I said, I've been there many times & will continue to go back. I've even looked into living in the Bahamas over the years (never with the means to act on it).

My last day in Nassau, a few hours before boarding a plane for Jamaica to continue my expensive research, I was robbed of over $1,700 cash by a hotel employee. I couldn't do much about it with adamant denials, ineffective police &...um...a few too many ounces of pirate rum in my system from a snorkeling junket a few hours earlier (the ONE time in my life I let down my hair & drank with strangers!). I was too buzzed to think straight!

But I've been back & will continue to go back to the touristy mess, because underneath all that phony foreign merchandise is a very intriguing history of nations colliding and ships wrecking. [tongue in cheek:]

Keep going back, but be advised the US State Department lists the crime threat to US citizens on New Providence Island (Nassau) as "critical", the highest possible. The State Dept. has already issued 3 warnings since January 2014. This despite accusations the Royal Bahamas Police Force seriously underreports criminal activity.

I knew a guy close to the last interior minister under the Ingraham Government and like anywhere justice has a price and Gardner had millions stashed away to spend over there. He spent a few weeks in the can in Nassau ad with every passing day his eagerness to get out causing him to raise his price for freedom even higher and higher... Of course his attorney did all the legal work and since there was less percentage in it for all concerned with keeping him locked up...he was soon out and everything went away. He is however banned from the water and spends his time on the Freeport Golf courses these days so they say

I can't jump on the conspiracy bandwagon just yet, but Alan Gardner is an outstanding golfer. You can find his name on the leaderboard of several past Bahamian events.

My parents got a great deal on a cruise to the Bahamas early this year. When they got to Nassau, ship security advised them in the strongest possible terms not to go into town, not even during the day. They were disappointed and felt both the cruise line and the travel agent should have been more forthright. Needless to say, they won't be going back anytime soon.

I did a little checking and found the Bahamas have the world's 11th highest homicide rate.

Basically, you are 8 times more likely to be murdered in the Bahamas than in the United States.

"Touristy mess" indeed.

Maybe the Bahamas should open the gates for professional salvage operations and funnel the proceeds into improving their police department and criminal justice system.

da right pay off amount hasn't been made mon , don't they know how banana republic's are run by now? and even after it is and the "boss" lets you in they will "insist" all da goodies be stored dere in a nice bank vault until the project is finished , den near da end of de project --they will say you was "cheating" them and stealing some of da goods and they will kick you out WITHOUT any of the goodies --so they get A the pay off --B all the income from you working the wreck sites (stuff bought from the locals --gas ,food .ect,ect.) and finally C all the stuff recovered ---aye screw da "white mon" for de slavery of long ago.--- welcome to the 3rd world and its dealings.
