Your cob could have been clipped and that's why it's under weight.

The 'standard' weight for an 8R coin of that vintage was 27.468 grams; the 1R had a standard weight of 3.43 grams.
Yours, at 2.1g is 1.33g or about 39% underweight.
Don......

I understand all that. But is that much weight loss typical?

Not to my knowledge except in extreme conditions; like shipwrecked coins that have been tossed for centuries.
Having been clipped and excessive wear and tear appears to be your coin.
Don....

Ok, thanks. I have no idea where it came from, I got it at a garage sale. It doesn't show the pitting of shipwreck coins I have seen, but I guess it could just be worn from an old Spaniard's pocket. The fact that it had legible date and markings are what prompted me to buy it.

BL,

Any chance it could be a repro??

No, its the real deal. The woman who sold it to me is a neighbor of mine - her ex-husband collected coins. She said she would give me the COA when she finds it, its buried somewhere in her ex-husband's papers.
