I don't know how it's been on the east coast, but this has been the worst year for lightning on the panhandle in years. Even if you don't hear thunder from a fairly distant storm, just remember freak bolts of lightning have been known to travel horizonally several miles from a thunderstorm striking people where the weather is nice and sunny.

electricity and water is not a good combo.keep in mind that electricity can only travel a 5 to 7 feet in water.this applys to 120 volts.dont know what the voltage of lightning is.im sure its in the millions of volts.

I should have clarified a bit...the two women were sitting on the sand at Pensacola Beach with great weather. The thunderstorm in question was over 5 miles north of them on Escambia Bay. A single bolt came out of the cloud nearly horizontal, traveled the 5 miles towards the south, striking the two women directly and were killed instantly. Both of their husbands were just a few yards away fishing when it happened but they were totally unscathed. This happened in Sept. 2004 just a week prior to the arrival of Hurricane Ivan.
